AO-1z22.jpg 17984 bytes This wreckage of a Zero Fighter model 22 was photographed at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica, California, in '92 when it had just arrived from an island in the South Pacific. Soon after these photographs were taken restoration began. The following year the aircraft was shipped to Russia for further restoration. The plan of restoring the aircraft to flyable condition with the original SAKAE engine was abandoned due to its unreliability. In '95 the aircraft was complete except for the power plant and was sent back to California. This Zero is scheduled to fly with a non-original engine(CR W-2600?) sometime in '97.

AO-z001.jpg 14588 bytes This Zero Fighter Model 63 is on display at the San Diego Air and Space Museum. In fact the last production model of famous Zero fighter, the Type 63's details had long been a mystery. The designation number indicates this A6M7 was supposed to have a water-methanol equipped SAKAE 31-KO engine. However, it seems the water-methanol equipment was never installed, so one can say that the model 63 was in fact a model 52 with some modifications. The Model 63's distinguishing centerline fuselage bomb rack and fuel tank opening behind the cockpit can be seen.
