Tupolev Tu-154
The Tupolev TU154 was designed to replace the TU104 and Ilyushin IL18 on Aeroflot's medium to long stage lengths. The first prototype flew in 1968, and passenger services began in 1971. A further development, the TU154M, features new engines, easily recognizable by the "clamshell" thrust reversers. While many of the more established airlines of former Eastern Bloc nations have replaced the TU154s with Western equipment, the breakup of Aeroflot has resulted in dozens of "new" airlines and color schemes. In addition, surplus TU154s are being acquired by new airlines in Europe, Asia, and Africa. This makes "TU154-spotting" among the most interesting of any aircraft in the world.
